problem on take off

I have a 1988 tristar 190. everytime I take off from a stop. (idle to wide open) the trans slips or the prop air pockets. it does it once then catches and goes. if I put it in gear for 5 sec. then push the throttle down slower it wont do it. it is very anoying everytime I try to pull someone out of the water it will do this and cause the skier to fall due to lost of boat movement for a moment. they engine is not dying when this happens. does anyone have any ideas.

A starting point would be checking/changing your transmission fluid. This could be the source of your slipping.....it would be the easiest to check and cheapest fix if it is the problem.
